Riley desperately needed this job. He was sick and tired of his grandparents paying for everything he needed they were old and needed all of the money they had. So he was so happy once he had gotten the job as a pizza chef at the pizza shack. He showered that morning and made sure his hair was straightened before he left the house. His grandparents were sleeping when he left which was good because he didn’t want them to drive him to work like they always did.
Besides it wasn’t that long of a walk anyway. It takes about fifteen minutes depending on whether or not he ran into somebody he wanted to talk to or something to get distracted by. One time he spent ten minutes throwing eggs at a tree. He finally arrived at work without being distracted- that has got to be a first. He walked into the back immediately washed his hands and got down to work.
“Hey bring on the orders Janet” He said through the little window letting the waitress know that he was in and ready to begin. He started rolling out the pizza dough since he knew that was one of the things that took the longest to do. Once he was finished with that he put it in the freezer until it was needed and started on a medium sized pizza. He continued this for several minutes until he got bored “ Janet where is everybody?” He asked her through the window being impatient. He hated being bored at work it was possibly the worst thing to happen to him in his mind.

What if my boss doesn't like me? Or, what if I drop a tray and spill stuff on customers? It was Addison's first day of work at the pizza shack and she was scared to death of making a mistake. She didn't even know how she had gotten dressed and started riding to work on her bike. She was dressed in khaki shorts and a t-shirt that said pizza shack in small print on the chest. Her hair was loose at the moment, but as the day went on, the hair elastic on her wrist would probably end up on in her hair.
Carefully locking up her bike by the back door, Addy nervously grasped the handle and pushed it open. It didn't seem like the place was very busy, but who would want pizza early in the morning? Walking up to the manager on duty, Addy smiled shyly and explained that she was new and didn't know what to do, but since she was a waitress, there wasn't much to do as of yet.
Wandering around the small restaurant, Addy familiarized herself with the place and then decided to take a look in the kitchen. When she entered, she didn't see anyone and smiled slightly. She had always loved her solitude, but her parents worried about her being too anti-social.

Riley never understood why they opened so early anyway. Usually they didn’t get any orders till about eleven. But sometimes they got a random person that had the munchies that wanted some food but that was very rare. He looked at the time and groaned. About thirty minutes till it started to get busy.
He looked through the window and noticed that Addison was here. Did she want pizza this early? Oh my gosh she was one of those druggies with the munchies! He tilted his head to the side as he watched her walk around the restaurant. He loved her they have been best friends since before he could remember. She knew that he was gay and that never seemed to bug her so their friendship worked perfectly. He figured that he could talk to her for abit before things got too busy. Since once they got busy they were usually busy till closing. He smiled “ Did you come here just to see me?” Riley asked her with his arms open basically saying that he was expecting a hug. He did not understand why she was here but he didn’t care he was bored and wanted some lovin.

Addison jumped and felt her heart racing when she heard a voice behind her, speaking to her. Turning around slowly, Addy saw Riley standing there with his arms open for a hug. Letting out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding, Addy walked up to him and wrapped her arms around him tightly while her cheeks reddened slightly at her stupidity. She should have recognized his voice, they had known each other as long as she could remember, but she couldn’t recognize his voice, that’s sad.
“I’m a waitress here now. Today’s my first day.” Addy mumbled into his shirt before pulling away slightly. Despite having known Riley for so long, Addison still acted shy when others were with them, it was only when they were alone that her shyness noticeably disappeared.
“Since when did you work here? She asked him as she played with a strand of hair that had fallen loose from behind her ear. Addy was thrilled that Riley was going to be working at the same place with her, but she was still nervous about waitressing. She had never done it before and she wasn’t the most coordinated person. In fourth grade she broke her wrist from tripping over her own feet, add in carrying trays of hot food and it would be a disaster waiting to happen.

Riley smiled when she hugged him back “ Yeah that’s my girl” He said happy that he hadn’t refused his hug. That’s the stuff that makes him fake cry which eventually leads to him getting a hug. When she pulled away and said it was her first day he grinned “ Sweet when business is slow I can throw pieces of peperoni at the back of your head” He said giving her an evil laugh like he was a criminal mastermind. He wasn’t a criminal but he was a mastermind. Oh if only the psychologists knew what was going on in his mind they would be sure to diagnose him with something.
Riley tapped his chin pretending to think about it “ Since the start of grade eleven, do you not listen to me when I talk or something?” He asked her with a laugh. It didn’t upset him she was probably busy trying not to fall down or injure others. She wasn’t exactly the most coordinated person in the world which made him laugh abit since the customers here occasionally tripped the waitresses- just depended on the jerk. But if anybody tripped her he would stab that person. She didn’t deserve that stuff.

Addison frowned. “I’ll tell your grandma on you if you throw pepperoni at me.” She said softly while taking a keen interest in another part of the kitchen. The threat was an empty threat because she trusted Riley to not embarrass her like that, even if he did throw some at her, she would probably just call in to work and avoid everyone in town. She could stay away from people for days on end as long as she had a few books.
Addy’s cheeks reddened once again and her eyebrows scrunched together as she tried to remember when Riley had told her that he was working at the pizza shack. After a few minutes, she gave up. She couldn’t remember the conversation and she shrugged. “Sorry.” How could she not have known he had been working since the beginning of eleventh grade? She was really a bad best friend.
“When does it start to pick up in here?” Addison asked as she shifted her eyes to the clock. As the seconds ticked by, Addy felt herself getting even more nervous. How was she going to be able to hold a full tray if she was as nervous as she was? She wouldn’t be able to hold it steady! Becoming a waitress was a bad idea for a klutz like Addy.

Riley’s smile dropped from his face. Shit she played the grandma card. That always got him to stop whatever it was he was doing. ” Fine fine you win I won’t throw peperoni” He told her sadly with a pout. Riley just laughed and shrugged “ It’s fine that you don’t remember you were probably trying not to trip as you were chewing bubble gum” He said giving her a wink. The great thing about Addison knowing he was gay was that there was no awkwardness when he got really cuddly with her.
Well sometimes he did get extremely cuddly but she never had to worry about him trying to get into her pants…. Well unless of course they were really cute and he thought would look better on him then game on! “ In approximately thirty minutes” He told her checking his imaginary watch. “ So be honest with me are you terrified?” He asked her tilting his head to the side. “ If you get scared or nervous look at me and I’ll do something that makes you laugh I promise” He said to her extending his pinky. He never broke a piny promise.

Addy smiled brightly when Riley admitted defeat. The grandma card always worked when she was with Riley, but sometimes she felt bad using it, it was a cheap shot. Addy blushed slightly when Riley brought up her klutziness. Everyone knew that she was more accident prone than others, but hearing it out loud was kind of embarrassing, though there wasn’t a good reason why.
Watching Riley look at his invisible watch, Addy laughed and felt relaxed for the first time that morning, but once he told her when people would start coming in, she felt all tense all over again. “I’m beyond terrified! If I could go hide out in the freezer I would!” Addy said, muttering the last part to herself. If she did try to hide, she knew Riley would just drag her out of hiding and make her face her fears. That was probably one of the reasons why their friendship worked so well.
Addy listened to Riley’s promise and then grabbed his pinky with her own. “I don’t know how I’d get through life without you.” She told him. Riley had been there to help her many times and vice versa.

Riley laughed “ Well you could but it’s colder than your freezer at home” He told her shrugging his shoulders. He felt it important to at least give her a fair warning if she was thinking about hiding in the freezer. Riley smiled and put his arm around her shoulder Well you would probably be lonely and life wouldn’t be as exciting as I make it” He said answering her question. He knew that being a waitress here wasn’t that bad of a job. He used to be a waiter until the boss realised that it wasn’t possible for him to cook the pizzas, take the orders, run back and make the pizzas, then bring them out and collect the money.
It just wasn’t possible or realistic. He personally thought that Janet could handle herself but he was happy that Addy was going to be working with him. Then again Janet is going into her sixties and is probably thinking about retiring at some point. “ Honestly girl it goes by so fast, well when we have people that is” He said trying to make her laugh. At least he would have somebody to bug during the slow times of the shift.

Addy rolled her eyes, “I wouldn’t actually hide in the freezer, it would be too cold in there and I don’t like the cold.” She told him before turning to look out the window that peered in on the dining room. No one had come in yet, but she could see them all wandering around the downtown. Soon they’d be coming in and Addy would try her hand at waitressing. She could just imagine the people swarming like bees and all coming in at once. She knew that her imagination made it seem worse than it would be, but she couldn’t help it! Addy was one of those people who made a list and stuck to the list, while she made the list she would worry about forgetting something to put on it.
“I hope you’re right.” Addy said, turning back to Riley. “It hasn’t even started and I’m ready for this day to be over!” Addy groaned. She didn’t know why she was so nervous about this job, or why she was stressing so much. Everyone went through a first day of work, her first day shouldn’t be any different. Plus, it was only a summer job! It wasn’t like she was working for some big executive. “I’ll be fine. Nothing’s going to happen, I’ll be fine.” Addy said to herself while taking some calming breaths.

Riley was such a liar. He lied through his teeth. He lied so much it was hard for him to be able to tell the truth from a lie. He told Addy there was still at least thirty minutes till people started coming in when in reality somebody booked a table and would be here in less than ten minutes. He gave her a hug and kissed her forehead “ You will be fine” He told her and walked back to the cooking area.
Since he already had on his hat and apron all he had to do was wait till somebody ordered the pizzas then he would make them. He hated when they were slow because he was usually the only person back here. And when he wasn’t here somebody else came in. It was too small to have more than one person working back there at a time. So he was often very bored.
He looked out through the window and waved at Addison just giving her a reminder where he was in case she forgot. Besides it was important to know where to place the order. He looked at the clock seeing that there was five or so minutes left so he decided to go wash his hands and get ready for hopefully a busy night.

After receiving a hug and kiss from Riley, Addison walked back out to the front of the restaurant and smiled when Riley waved to her. While hanging around out front, Addy heard the jingle of the little bell over the door and looked up. Before her was a big group. “Um, may I help you?” She asked. They informed her that they had booked a table and after consulting the seating chart, she took them to their table and jotted down their order on her notepad. “You lied to me Riley!” Addy said when she brought the order slip to the window for him.
The easy part of waitressing was done, she had taken the order and given it to Riley. Glancing at the copy of the order slip, Addy quickly grabbed some cups and filled them with the sodas that were written down. Then she loaded a tray and carefully picked it up to bring to the table. Addy sighed with relief once her tray was empty. The drinks were the one thing that she was really afraid of dropping. They would make a huge mess compared to the pizza and on a tray a pizza’s weight is distributed evenly compared to a bunch of sodas.
“Are the pizza’s done yet Riley?” Addy asked while leaning on the counter.

Riley ducked down behind the counter when he heard the door open. Then when Addison brought the order to him she commented on how he had lied to her “ I know but you love me” He said taking the order from her and started putting together the order. Three large, one meatlovers, one Hawaiian, and one plain cheese. Easy he thought to himself as he made them. He rang the little bell once they were finished.
“ My suggestion is to take them one at a time” He told her shrugging his shoulders. They were extremely hot and if she were to drop it on herself or onto somebody else it would really hurt. Once he dropped a pizza on his wrist and you can still see abit of the scar. Riley waited till Addison took them and he decided he would watch her to see if she was doing ok and if she struggled he would probably go help her. He didn’t bother telling her about the accident he had with the pizza it would just make her more nervous than she needed to be.
She was really lucky right now that there were only a few people it could be a whole lot busier.

Once she heard Riley ring the order up bell, Addy felt her eyes get wide. On the counter waiting for her were three large pizzas. Taking one on a tray, she brought it over to the table and then went back for the other two. She could feel the heat coming off of them and really didn’t want to burn herself. It wouldn’t be the first time and it wouldn’t be the last, but she didn’t want to do it.
After serving the big group, someone else came in and placed an order to go. So far, it wasn’t so bad working at the Pizza Shack. Since it wasn’t a regular sit down restaurant, she didn’t have to check in with the customers, but she still had to do everything else. While waiting for Riley to fill the order to go, Addy seated several more orders and quickly the restaurant was becoming busier. Surprisingly, Addison was able to keep up with all the people without screwing up.
I was worried for nothing. Addy thought as she kept placing orders and picking up orders with ease. Quickly she became confident enough to carry heavier trays, but that confidence soon disappeared when some kids from school came in.

Addison was doing really well. Which is good because things were getting at the busy time of the day. Adam was so busy that he would end up putting a pizza in the oven and directly had to make another one. This was his favorite part of his job being so busy that he didn’t notice that he was spending almost ten hours of his life every day in here. Addison was getting so good that she was able to carry two at a time.
He only suggested she take one at a time when she first started just to get an idea of how heavy they are. He hoped she was making good tips. Since it was a little slow at the moment he walked into the restaurant noticing that Addy had stopped and stared at some people from school. He walked back into the kitchen to have better access towards knifes and other things that he could throw at them if they started anything. He could’ve stayed out there with her but technically he wasn’t allowed out there for long periods of time.
Stupid boss and his stupid rules that don’t really make much sense. He watched and wondered how she was going to handle this.
